Her Book Review: Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill (2014)

Why she read it: Reviewed positively on EW.com

Would she recommend it: Yes

Her review: If you are a fan of Ernest Hemingway’s writing or Raymond Carver, you are probably familiar with the idea of the Iceburg. Describe what’s above the water with the knowledge that so much more exists under the surface.

This book fits that category as well. It’s a first person narrative, told from the perspective of The Wife. We get glimpses of her marriage, motherhood and the challenges that a marriage faces – it’s not all about big dramatic events, but small, little moments.

This is a very short book, clocking in on a mere 170 or so pages. But it’s one of those books which draws you in and makes you imagine what exists in the iceburg of this relationship. A lovely little book, a quick effecting read.
