Why he watched it: original film was campy sci-fi fun
His rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
His review: I didn’t know much, if anything, about this film when I set the DVR to record, just curious. Didn’t even realize it was all CGI until it started. There is an odd dichotomy to the CGI—it uses a realistic style, matching the original live-action movie in look. However, the designers couldn’t get the mouths right, which cheapens the animation and overall quality of the movie.
Despite this, there is an fair attempt to build characters linked to an action-packed story, with some gratuitous CGI nudity tossed in (including a co-ed bathroom scene reminiscent of a similar scene in the original). It does move Carl into a darker arc, but otherwise there is nothing original here, but better than the other sequels. I still hold the animated TV series, Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles in higher esteem. It was closer to Heinlein’s original novel in military equipment, and did more to develop an original story.
Watch this if you have an interest in the series, but otherwise you can let this ship pass you by.
