Our Movie Review: Draft Day (2014)

Why we watched it: he is a big NFL fan

Our rating: 1 out of 5 stars

His review: I don’t understand the logic of the marketing of this film. Unlike the actual games, the NFL draft if really appealing to die-hard fans, who thus know how it works. But the absurdity of this movie would only work for fans who have no understanding of the draft. True draft fans know that for any of these reasons Kevin Costner’s GM would be fired immediately:

  • Trading 3 first round picks for a player he hasn’t fully evaluated
  • Making such a trade without consulting with his coach or owner and being pressured to do it in his car
  • Spending most of the draft wandering around the building and not in the war room

Other absurdities:

  • A player trashing the GM’s office to get traded
  • GM panicking at the sixth spot because his to two choices have been picked

I also couldn’t get past the age difference between Costner and his love interest, budget guru Jennifer Garner. Would it be so hard to cast an actress closer to his age? Do we have to continually have these older leading men with younger loves?

So this movie didn’t work for me. It felt like a typical Hollywood recipe, with a big dose of NFL marketing. Not good.

Her review: I am not a football, and even I found this movie ridiculous.
